HIS Kids: Going Back Home

He sat at the little red table at PS I Love You, crayons scattered around his coloring sheet, a rainbow coming to life under his careful strokes. The page read “I AM LOVED” in big letters, which is fitting, because love had been the language spoken over this little boy for months. His foster mama stood close, with tears in her eyes, soaking in every moment. Today was the day. The day he would go back home to his mama. This was a special place, a sacred in-between where kindness met need- where dignity was restored with shoes, clothes, and a bag of Goldfish. But more than that, it was a place where one mama stood and the other awaited his arrival, both loving the same child in different, beautiful ways.

She had brought him here not just to pass time, but to help make sure his mama had what she needed. Diapers, clothes, and pajamas. Not out of duty, but out of deep, sacrificial kindness. Because love does that. She watched him color, the word “LOVED” taking shape in purples and blues. She knew this wasn’t just a coloring page. It was a picture of the journey they had all walked. She asked him, “Who loves you Bubba,” and his answer was simple, pure, and eternal as he said, “Jesus.” This was a journey of God’s hand painting redemption across broken places. This goodbye wasn’t bitter, but rather it was sacred. Because she had seen the transformation, both in him and in his mama.

She didn’t expect recognition. She didn’t want a spotlight. But God saw it all, the late-night prayers, the quiet sacrifices, the thousands of tiny yeses that added up to this holy moment of letting go. God had written a story of healing. Not just for the boy. Not just for his mama. But for her too.

Because this is the gospel: to love deeply, to give sacrificially, and to rejoice when restoration comes. There is a calling, holy and weighty, placed on the hearts of parents, both biological and foster. A calling to love HIS children like He loves us, selflessly, sacrificially, and without conditions. Whether for a lifetime or a season, it’s a divine invitation to reflect His heart, to be His hands, and to steward the lives He’s entrusted to us with tenderness and truth
